Types of Breast Pumps

Manual Breast Pump

  • Single breast pump (can only be used on one breast at a time)
  • Requires manual pumping (no batteries)
  • Used for occasional pumping
  • WIC eligible

This pump is great to use for a quick outing (2-3hours) and mom needs to pump to prevent engorgement. Its easy to store in a purse and is great for emergency pumping if you get stuck away from your baby longer than planned.

Single Breast Pump (Electric)

  • Single breast pump (can only be used on one breast at a time)
  • Electric Pump (uses batteries and/or a wall adapter)
  • Used for occasional pumping

This pump is great to use for a quick outing (2-3hours) and mom needs to pump to prevent engorgement. Its easy to store in a purse and is great for emergency pumping if you get stuck away from your baby longer than planned (just make sure the battery is charged!).

Double Breast Electric Breast Pump

  • Used for frequent pumping
  • May be battery operated, use a wall adapter, or both
  • Typically covered by insurance (not all insurances provide full coverage and there may be out of pocket expenses)
  • Best used after milk supply has been established
  • WIC eligible

This pump is great for moms who are frequently or exclusively breast milk pumping. Most machines will have a carry bag that either comes standard with the pump or is available for purchase.

Hospital Grade Electric Breast Pump

  • Electric double breast pump
  • Typically used to establish milk supply (for use within the first month after birth)
  • Available for rental (not covered by insurance)
  • WIC eligible (for loan, no rental fee)

This pump is ideal for moms who are unable to establish a milk supply (as determined via IBCLC and/or Physician assessment). It is usually available for rent from a hospital, Baby Café, or La Leche League.
